I'm in the business of filling glasses. But not the kind you're thinking of.

I started Nicholas Mac. Mobile Optician because I believed there was a better way — a more human way — to deliver eyecare. And somewhere between the kitchen table appointments, the retirement residence visits, and the moments where someone tries on a new pair and genuinely lights up, I realized this little business has become a win for everyone it touches. So consider this my toast.

I love my parents. I love my grandparents. I love my family fiercely — and that love doesn't stay at home when I go to work. When I sit down with a client, I'm not looking at a file or a prescription number. I'm looking at someone's mother. Someone's grandfather. Someone who matters deeply to the people who love them. The moment I started approaching every appointment that way, something shifted. That clinical distance — the glass wall between optician and client — began to dissolve.

And it dissolves so much faster when someone is comfortable. When we're in their living room, their kitchen, their favourite chair — the place they chose — something opens up. They tell me things they might never say in a waiting room. What's been bothering them about their current glasses. How their eyes feel at the end of the day. What their life actually looks like and what they need their eyewear to keep up with. The appointment slows down in the best way, and the decisions start to make real sense — not because I'm steering them anywhere, but because we've taken the time to actually understand what we're solving for.

That's when I get to share the part I love most: the optics. The craft of it. I'm genuinely passionate about what goes into a well-made pair of glasses — the lens technology, the coatings, the way small details can transform how someone experiences their day — and when there's trust in the room, I get to explain all of that. Not as a sales pitch, but as a conversation between two people figuring out the best possible answer together.

This is my passion, not my pressure. I'm not sitting across from you anxious about making rent, mentally tallying whether I can upsell a second or third pair. That energy doesn't exist in the room with us — and I think people feel that. There's no agenda hiding behind the small talk. Just genuine curiosity about what you need, and the patience to discover it together.

For the seniors I serve, that means something I think is deeply undervalued in healthcare: dignity. The dignity of being seen in a space that's yours. Of having your time respected and your preferences matter. Of not having to navigate a system that was never really designed for you in the first place. For their families, it means peace of mind. And for me, it means everything.

This is a win for the client who finally has glasses that fit their life. A win for the family who stopped worrying. A win for the community that deserves local, personal, accessible care. And honestly — it's a win for me too, getting to do something I love, for people I genuinely care about, every single day.
